I would love to spend a year abroad in high school. I’m a freshman now. Is it too late to do it for sophomore year (this coming school year 2010-11)? My family is probably going to be going on sabbatical for part of my junior year so I can’t do it then. My senior year seems so far away–I really hate the school I go to now–but if that’s the only option I have, I’ll do it.

How would I go about going abroad? What are some good programs? I’m looking into Rotary. Any others that are good? And where do you think I should go? I’ve taken up to French 3, so a Francophone place like France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, etc, might make the most sense. I’d love to go anywhere else, too. English-speaking places like England, Scotland, Australia, etc sound good, though I’ve heard it’s best to go somewhere that speaks a foreign language.

Finally, how much would it cost? Do I have to pay to go abroad and stay with a host family, even if I go to a public school? Is there financial aid, or scholarships?

All advice is appreciated! I need your experience to help me guide mine! Thanks everyone!

Going on exchange is an incredible experience! I applaud your interest in it.
To the best of my knowledge, with all reputable organizations, it’s most likely too late to apply for 2010-2011 (although I don’t know the details of every organization) – the application deadlines tend to be fairly early.
My biggest piece of advice is to go with an organization that is listed with the Council for Standards on International Educational Travel (csiet.org). They routinely audit programs for quality. While it is possible that a good organization is not listed with them, it is less likely and I would advise doing more research on anyone that is not listed with them.
YFU (Youth For Understanding), AFS, and Rotary are frequently called "the big 3" when it comes to exchanges – long histories and good reputations, although a few others are making their way up that list. Please forgive my bias towards YFU – it’s the one that I have direct experience with (I am a 5-time host mom and volunteer). I am gaining indirect experience by corresponding with former students. When I have asked exchange students why they chose YFU, I get the following answers: (1) YFU gave them more bang for their buck and/or (2) someone they knew and trusted recommended YFU. 95% of the fees collected by YFU go for direct program costs (airline tickets, support in hosting country, etc.). YFU has been around for 59 years and has learned how to make exchanges successful.
The cost varies considerably from organization to organization, destination country to destination country, and summer to longer programs. In general, costs this year for a summer program were around $6000-$7500 and semester/year programs were $8000-$10,000. There are scholarships, but it is definitely too late to apply for those for 2010-2011. You will have to pay to go, even if you stay with a family and go to public school. Most reputable organizations will pay for your airfare and will have staff and trained volunteers to watch over you while you are away. In some places, you may also have to buy school uniforms. In some places all school-related fees are covered in the ‘tuition’ for the program. It varies.
Below are some links that you may find helpful.
The process would go something like this (some of the steps can be done in a different order or at the same time as others):
– Talk to your parent(s).
– Choose an organization with which to travel.
– Choose your country and length of stay. Some countries (such as France, French-speaking Belgium, and French-speaking Switzerland) do require previous language study. Some do not. With YFU, this year there were 30+ countries that did not. (I personally think it would be cool to be the only person in school to speak Hungarian, but that’s just my odd personality.) Where you go is a highly individualized question – it depends on your preferences for lifestyle, language, climate, etc etc etc. Your parent(s), teachers, and other advisors can help you with that.
– Talk to your teachers and school counselor. This is especially important if you want to try to get school credit for your exchange.
– Apply to the exchange program and/or scholarships. In a typical year, YFU has about 150 students who go to Japan with a full or partial scholarship. Another 150 will go to other places with full or partial scholarships. (There are about 500 students who go overseas with YFU in a year.)
– Participate in an in-person interview.
– Assuming you are accepted, pay for the program.
– As soon as you find out who your host family will be, correspond (snail mail, email, internet chat, skype, whatever you both have). It’s not an official requirement, just something I (as a host mom) think is a VERY good idea.
– Attend a pre-departure orientation – this gets you ready for the experience by explaining all of the rules, what to expect, and (if someone is there who has been to the country of your choice) some country-specific information.
– Go on exchange, work hard, have fun.
– Come back and share your experience.
I hope this helps you. Good luck to you no matter what you choose!!

The following trailer is an official selection of the 2010 International Movie Trailer Festival, presented by the Baltimore Movie Trailer Park.

Welcome to the Melbourne underworld. Following the death of his mother, seventeen year–old Joshua ‘J’ Cody (newcomer James Frecheville) moves in with his hitherto–estranged family, under the watchful eye of his doting grandmother, Janine ‘Smurf’ Cody (Jacki Weaver), and her three criminal sons — the Cody boys.

Eldest son and armed robber, Andrew ‘Pope’ Cody (Ben Mendelsohn) is in hiding from a gang of renegade detectives. Middle brother Craig (Sullivan Stapleton) is a successful but volatile drug dealer, whilst the youngest Cody, Darren (Luke Ford), naïvely follows his elder brothers’ lead.

Just as ‘Pope’s’ business partner and best friend, Barry Brown (Joel Edgerton), decides that he wants out of the game, recognising that their days of old–school banditry are all but over, tensions between the family and the police explode. ‘J’ finds himself at the centre of a cold–blooded revenge plot that turns his family upside down and which throws him directly into the path of senior homicide detective, Nathan Leckie (Guy Pearce).

“Animal Kingdom” is a powerful crime drama exploring the tense battle between a criminal family and the police, and the ordinary lives caught in the middle.

MPAA Rated R for violence, drug content and pervasive language.

Produced by Porchlight Films & Screen Australia in association with Film Victoria, Screen NSW, Fulcrum Media Finance & SHOWTIME Australia. Released by Sony Pictures Classics, an Sony Pictures Entertainment company.

I’ve decided to take a year off and travel around. I kind of just need to get out of this town for a while and explore new horizons in my life. What’s an overall good country/city/place to be? It would be a plus if I could even go go to college there. Somewhere in Europe? Canada? Australia? What’s a nice place to be at right now? Language barrier might be an issue, but it’ll be a while until I can actually leave here, so I can always learn. It’s your personal opinion, but I want to hear your input!
Back up your answers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why why why?

Australia.

edit:
WHY!?
Because the weather is amazing, the girls are hot, the beaches are the best, the top 4 theme parks in Australia are within 10 minutes of each other. The crap about Australia being racist is a load of crap, we’re pretty damn tolerant of all races, cultures and beliefs. You won’t meet friendlier, happier, people than Australians.

Hit the major cities, Brisbane and Gold Coast for the 4 Awesome theme parks*, Sydney for it’s iconic landmarks and Zoo, Melbourne etc.

Definitely come to Queensland though, it’s about to get hot and sunny and the beaches will be great around this time.

* http://myfun.com.au/ Three of the theme parks are owned by the same people, SeaWorld, MovieWorld, Wet’n'Wild

Then you have the Numero Uno of theme parks, DreamWorld

Building the day is an interactive resource for use in early years classrooms. It provides the teacher with an interactive tool to stimulate thought and conversation about the classroom environment and the people within it. This stimulation allows for relevant language to be identified and discussed in the context of the real class environment, as well as provide an opportunity for learning. Many of the tasks included in Building the day have formed part of the early years classroom for many years. Building the day simply provides the opportunity to introduce these topics or tasks in an interactive environment and use this added stimulus to engage your students in a practical learning environment. Building the day can be constructed totally with the classs help and input. How you use it is up to you. The in-built flexibility allows you to use and manage the resource as you believe will best benefit your students at a given time.
There are two realms on earth: a demon realm, and a human realm, separated by an invisible "wall". A long time ago, the humans had given up on magic and stopped believing in it, never learning much about it. The demons didn’t. The demon realm is separated into many kingdoms. The king and queen of the biggest and best kingdom (it controlled most of the other kingdoms and it is the one most advanced in magic) had three children: two sons and a daughter. (BTW, everything in the demon realm, including the language, is incomprehensible and unpronounceable ) They were sent to the human realm disguised as children to study the humans. Each of them were given to a family that never knew of their secret and thought that they were actually their children. The oldest son, Yakubu (human name) was sent to a family in Nigeria, but once he had turned 24, he moved to explore South America (he is 26 at the beginning of the novel). The daughter, Kaitlyn (her human name), was given to a family in Australia, but she moved to China when she turned 20 (23 in the novel.) The most important one, Oliver, was sent to London, England, but moved to the U.S.A. when he turned 18 for "school" (20 in the novel).

Each of them has a ring and a tattoo on their right hand that look like a snake at first. The rings are all different colors. (Oliver’s is green (matching his eyes), Yakubu’s is yellow, Kaitlyn’s is blue (matching her eyes), their father’s is white, and their mother’s is black) The "snake" has four eyes that correspond with the colors of the others’ rings. They use the rings and tattoos in order to communicate. The put the ring on the finger above the eye of the person they want to talk to. If they don’t want to speak to anyone, they put their ring on their right hand.

Each of them is sent to Earth with rules:
1. Never reveal your true form or name to anyone.
2. Never perform magic in public.
3. NEVER fall in love with a human or their will be dire consequences (They are never specified to them. Oliver just assumes that they would get in trouble and get sent back to the demon realm.)

All of them are fluent in different Earth languages, but they have English in common. Yakubu speaks Nigerian, Latin, and Spanish. Kaitlyn speaks Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese. Oliver speaks Italian, French, and German.

Any ideas? Opinions? Criticism?

Thanks in advance.
Well, Oliver was in London up until he turned ten and he started moving around Europe (to Germany, Italy, and France) but cam e back to England again.
When I said everything was incomprehensible and unpronounceable, I meant the words and the letters. A human would not be able to speak it.

seems like a novel idea for a fantasy story BUT for the bits on earth you need to research to make sure that you get your facts right and dont make silly errors – for instance there is no language "Nigerian" – the main languages spoken in Nigeria are English, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba with various other regional languages as well
similarly no single chinese language the main spoken language being Mandarin others include Wu, Cantonese, Min, Jin, Xiang, Hakka, Gan, Hui and Ping and there are many, many more

Making errors like those two in your finished work will immediately put off most readers as they would think that you had not researched your book at all – a pity because that would mean they wouldn’t find out much about your writing at all.

Perhaps the best advice I can give is to slow down – if you have an idea by all means note it down but dont rush to get everything written about it – check the facts, do your research and your story will be much improved.

Thanks in advance.
I’m mad. Yahoo posted this question three times and didn’t even put them all on and wasted my questions. :[
When I said everything was incomprehensible and unpronounceable, I meant the words. No human would be able to speak the language.
oops. If they don’t want to talk to any of them, they keep their ring on their LEFT hand
It’s a love story. Oliver falls in love with a human. The human girl is the narrator.

It’s an interesting idea but I’d say you do something about the ring idea… Why not just make it: if they do not want to talk to eachother they just ignore it? A lot easier…
Idea is that all three of them should break one rule… If Oliver is your main, have him either fall in love or lose a grip on his humanform magic and turn demon-y on half of London.
Can’t give you many ideas, you seem to have developed it. Though you can always add a small community on Earth that has an idea of magic but are too ignorant and have wiped a whole city from the memory of the world. (They might also have some way of contacting a demon who hates said family.) You can always have them chase Oliver and the rest in crowded places and in the end one of the demons kills a handful of the wizards. So he gets dragged back into the demon-y world and is punished as a murderer… Then Oliver sets off for revenge on them wizards after destroying his ring so he can’t be dragged back…
Dunno, just a silly idea.
